SUPPLY CHAIN SURVEY 6/21/22: Tuesday morning at the supermarket

The overall full store product supply deteriorated for the second week, reversing the two prior weeks of improvement. These may have been nothing more than random vartiations. This week, for 15 specific items we wanted to buy, 7 were not available. and for 2 we couldn't get the quantity we wanted. Last week 7 of the 15 were not available, 1 was not available in the economical large size, and for 2 items, we could only buy the 1 available when we wanted to buy 2. The week before was even worse -- of 15 specific items we wanted to buy, 9 were not available. This week we decided to shop on Tuesday morning, rather than our usual Sunday morning, hoping for better luck. That didn't seem to work.

This week our supermarket had more empty shelves, compared with last week. My overall rating is based on my impression of the product supply in the ENTIRE store -- not just those 15 specific items we want to buy every week.

We normally shop at 6am Sunday morning when the store opens for business, at the huge Meijer's supermarket in Southfield, Michigan. Previous experiments with shopping on Friday, Saturday and Monday mornings revealed no differences when compared with Sunday mornings.

No refrigerated Meijer's Kosher bread and butter pickles that I want -- not available for over one month. Spicy versions are available, but I don't like them.

Yogurt
Not quite fully stocked for the second week, after being fully stocked for seven weeks in a row. This department had been a disaster in 1Q 2022.  And then a miracle in 2Q 2022.

Planter's Dry Roasted Peanuts (product wanted not available)
This week there were 3  34.5 ounce size
and the 16 ounce size bottles were fully stocked.

The more expensive per ounce 16 ounce version was also out of stock.

Jif Smooth Peanut Butter (product wanted not available)
All Jif peanut butter was gone due to a recall (for the fifth  week in a row). There was a small amount of regular Skippy, and lots of Meijer's brand -- cheaper and  definitely not as good as Jif.

Packaged deli meats (product wanted not available)
Fully stocked with ham and turkey. Two brands of salami, but not the low cost, better tasting brand I wanted to buy, for the fourth week in a row. There are normally four brands of salami.

ACE bread from Canada
4 Harvest Grain flavor loaves available and we bought all of them. A 22% price increase from $3.69 to $4.49, but there was a buy one get 50% off the second loaf sale. The resulting sale price was better than $3.69 each for four loaves -- a clever way to disguise a a big price hike (for one week). Past weeks loaves: 0, 0, 0, 6 and 0.

This week 4 of 12 flavors were stocked, compared with 7. 6, 4, 0, 0, 3, 2, 3 and 2 of 12, in prior weeks. A very poor selection of other brands of chocolate bars for the fifth week in a row, after a good selection for the three weeks before that.
