SUPPLY CHAIN SURVEY: Good News on Thursday morning at the supermarket, on July 28, 2022

The overall full store product supply significantly improved this week. The biggest week over week improvement in a year !

And we has a much better week for finding 15 products we want to buy every week.

I hope this was not just a lucky shopping day. After 45 years of grocery shopping in Michigan, I don't enjoy going when so many items I want are out of stock, Today was almost like the good old days. One week is not a long term trend and we still stock up on items when they show up. Especially if they are on sale. We would normally spend $150 for a week's worth of food for the two of us at this very reasonable priced chain -- about 20% cheaper than competitors such as Krogers. Today we bought $236 of items, including savings of $57 by stocking up on sale items that don't spoil. With the high inflation, and so many out of stock items in recent weeks, I think it's smart to buy eight weeks worth of salami at a 30% off sale price. Sure I feel bad that there's no salami left for anyone else ... for a moment. I consider salami a basic food group.

Today only 3 items of 15 were not available
and one item, Jif chunky peanit butter, was affected by a recall.
In prior weeks, for the 15 items
we want to buy every week:
8 of 15 specific items surveyed were not available
5 of 15 items were not available
6 of 15 items were not available.
7 of 15 items were not available.
7 of 15 items were not available,
The week before was the record low:
9 of 15 specific items were not available.

My overall rating is based on my impression
of the product supply in the ENTIRE store
-- not just those 15 specific items

We normally shop at 6am Sunday morning when the store opens for business, at the huge Meijer's supermarket in Southfield, Michigan. Previous experiments with shopping on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday mornings revealed no differences when compared with Sunday mornings. This was our first Thursady pp no reasom to assume Thursdays are better than other days. Weekly sales begin 8am Sunday morning -- that should be the best time to find sale products you want.
